Rita Lewis is a proud Denver native,
3rd generation member of New
Hope Baptist Church, a graduate of
George Washington High School,
Spelman College (Atlanta, GA), the
University of Colorado-School of
Law and a member of Alpha Kappa
Alpha Sorority, Inc.
Ms. Lewis is the Former President
of the Denver Branch of the NAACP,
former Board Member of the
Denver Metro Fair Housing Center
(DMFHC) and former General
Counsel and Senior Advisor for the
National Organization of African
Americans in Housing (NOAAH).
Ms. Lewis was appointed by
Governor John Hickenlooper in
2015 to serve a four-year term as a
Commissioner for the Colorado
Civil Rights Commission.
Ms. Lewis was recognized as one of
the Denver Urban Spectrum’s (DUS)
“2014 African Americans Who Make
A Difference” Honorees and one of
the 2014 Honorees of the Colorado
Black Women For Political Action's
(CBWPA) 3rd Annual “Women
Making History.”
Ms. Lewis was a featured panelists
for the 2014 El Paso County Bar
Association’s Law Day Luncheon
(American Democracy and the Rule
of Law: Why Every Vote Counts) as
well as a panelist for History
Colorado’s 2014 discussion on Race,
Economics and Healthcare which
focused on health, housing and
social justice.
In 2016, Ms. Lewis received the Dr.
Mary McLeod Bethune Legacy
Award of Achievement from the
National Council of Negro Women
(NCNW) - Denver Section.
In late 2016, she was selected to
work in Colorado Springs as an
Election Watcher for the General
Election by the Colorado Democrats
and El Paso County Democratic
Party.
Most recently in 2018, Ms. Lewis
was honored to act as the keynote
speaker for the HUD's Region 8's
celebration of the 50th Anniversary
of the Fair Housing Act.
